Damon® braces are what we call “self-ligating” brackets. They use a trap-door system that holds your orthodontic archwire into place, as opposed to tying the archwire to the bracket with a rubber band or ligature.
Not only does this create a lower-profile appearance, but it also allows the orthodontic archwire to “glide” underneath the trap door of your Damon® brackets.
The entire goal of self-ligating Damon® braces is to create a more comfortable experience for our adult braces patients. Since the orthodontic archwire isn’t bound to each tooth, there is less friction and pressure involved overall. This reduces discomfort to specific teeth and allows the mild pressure to be distributed across the mouth as opposed to being focused on one or two areas.
